Cancer is the 1st cause of death through illness in children.<\/p>\n
Cancer affects children and often certain types of cancer are specific to them. Furthermore, children are still in full phase of growth and development and are particularly sensitive to aggressive treatments.<\/p>\n
Curing a child with cancer was unimaginable 50 years ago. Today, 80% of affected children and more than 90% of children with leukemia can be cured.<\/p>\n
However, cancer is heterogeneous, the overall cure rate is very different in different types of cancer and for some, even today, no therapy exists. Research on childhood cancers should help to identify new treatment avenues for difficult to cure diseases. It should also reduce the side effects of current treatments, thus reducing the long-term side effects in these children who will soon be adults.<\/p>\n
